Transplanting a Face: The Ethical Issues

A face transplant is different from other kinds of transplants, medical ethicists said on Wednesday, and the risks and benefits to the patient must be weighed carefully.
My Reaction:
A few years ago, I saw the movie “Face Off”. This movie impressed me a lot and gave me a surprising and unexpected feeling because I have never thought of that one day we can do “something” on our faces. Besides, I am convinced that this movie brings our people and society many controversies on morality, medical care, and……etc. Nowadays, our techniques on medical science have been improved and developed to an advanced step in a fast speed. But I do approve of the problems mentioned on this article that it produces so many ethical problems which are inevitable.
First, the side effects after that king of surgery are numerous, and, even death. We can see a large number of cases concerning serious damages and harms for patients who take certain medicine after the surgeries. Next, experts question the correctness of doing face transplants. If we have enough medical resources, we should make good use of it to help more and more people who really need help. As far as I am concerned, people shouldn’t waste too many resources on it. Eventually, I think the most important and serious problem is that it disobeys the ethics. It is very informal to see a person’s face whose body is dead on a live person. Although this technique has been developed, we shouldn’t make it happen and the specialists ought to emphasize the flaws of the face transplant. (236 words)

TV channel to broadcast assisted suicide

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A British TV channel was scheduled to air a controversial documentary Wednesday night showing a terminally ill man committing assisted suicide. The film follows retired university professor Craig Ewart during the last four days of his life in 2006, when he visited a Swiss clinic with his wife, Mary, in order to die.
My Reaction:
When I first saw this news, it reminded of the fact that I have seen the film in my senior high school. However, I didn’t have such a strong feeling as I have now. At present, people have different definitions and attitudes towards death. Some people simply refer to it as the end of life; some may regard it as the release from all annoying things or people. What they are in common is they think human beings should end their lives when a suitable time comes nor with assisted suicide. As far as I am concerned, whether to take the assisted suicide or not is depended on the patient or the person involved.
I n my opinion, the right of life is held on our hands. We can decide how to use the rest of our lives and which way to end our lives. I absolutely approve of Craig Ewart because I think he was loyal to what he did and, most of all, his attitude towards his life, disease, and family. Despite receiving so many criticisms, he did what he really wanted to do. Besides, I appreciate his optimistic thoughts towards all the difficulties and problems and his immeasurable courage to carry out the way which he chose to end his colorful life show. (216 words)

A Slice of Italy Across the Sea

THE sexy scene could have been mistaken for Cannes or Monaco. On a clear Tuesday last August, the cobblestone promenade in the coastal town of Piran was filled with well-tanned men sitting under thatched umbrellas, watching a collection of topless bronzed women splayed across the rocky beach. The vroom of Vespas could be heard zipping through the town’s mazelike alleys.

My Reaction:
As far as I am concerned, I don’t have a lot of chances to travel abroad. When I saw this report and the pictures of the Piran in the Slovenia, it gives me a special feeling because I have never seen the medieval town. Therefore, after I saw it, I really want to take a trip to some well-known medieval towns to understand their history, architectures, people, food and cultures. Through taking the tour, we can totally know the development of the town and fit into the local culture.
Besides, in Taiwan, it is seldom for us to see such beautiful beach. Because of the pollutions growing worse and worse, coasts in Taiwan gradually lose their beautiful outlooks. In other words, they are not beautiful as they were before. Factories, companies and other modern buildings have invaded the ecology of the sea shores. As a consequence, every time I go to the beach, I can see so much garbage and trash thrown by people without morality instead of some magnificent scenery and clean sea or ocean. We should take actions with our government to protect our sea coasts in Taiwan. If we keep polluting and breaking them, we will never be likely to see clean sea and the beach can not be beautiful anymore.(214 words)

Astronomers find hints of water on Saturn moon

Astronomers looking at the spectacular supersonic plumes of gas and dust shooting off one of Saturn's moons say there are strong hints of liquid water, a key building block of life.

My Reaction:
In our modern lives, we use too many resources at our wills in order to make our lives better. However, we don’t notice that we have destroyed our earth and produced a lot of environmental problems that they are too late to be discovered. These reasons also remind people to figures out the solutions and because of the rapid development of the astronomy, scientists begin to find the planets to substitute our earth if one day we use out all resources on earth. Luckily, we have found that Mars is a planet which we can immigrate there. As the further studying of this issue, scientists also find others and some detailed information and something never found before.
In addition, through this news we can find that our science is so advanced that we can find the materials on the other planets to take actions in early stages to keep it from succeeding. Nowadays, we have invented a lot of astronomic technology and equipments. To my amazement, it is very successful used on many different such as developing new sources, studying every planet’s construction or how the planet is produced. And maybe trying to protect our earth in advance is more important to find solutions after the tragedy happened. (208words)

Abortion: Rates Down for Some

From 1990 to 2005, the total number of abortions in the U.S. fell from 1.6 million to 1.2 million

My Reaction:
In our modern society, it seems that abortion has become a common phenomenon, because some people don’t care about the morality of the life and the meaning of building a good and happy family. They do the abortions whenever they want and some terrible parents do not consider enough to make the decisions. According to many professional researches, they all show that abortion does very harm to women’s health. What’s worse, some may be barren after doing the operations. Besides, we can an inappropriate effect, which is that people strangle and stop the lives at their wills. In my opinion, I think parents have no right to stop their babies give births to by their mothers.
In addition, although this report tells us the drop of the abortion, governments should take actions to go a step further in order to keep the percentage of abortion decreasing continuously. However, to solve the occurrences of some miserable cases is also important. They can set up some institutions to help women who gave births out of wedlock, for example. And they also ought to guide our teenagers not to have sex relationship with the opposite sex and to become “parents” in their early ages. (201 words)

Sex on TV Increases Teen Pregnancy, Say Report

Sex on TV Increases Teen Pregnancy, Say Report
Sex on TV has come a long way in the past few years. Anyone who saw the first episode of 90210— a pair of students engage in oral sex in the first episode of the new sequel to Beverly Hills 90210 — can attest to that.
My Reaction:
When I saw this news , it reminded me that when I was a junior high school student, I had heard too many horrible experiences from other students who were the same age as I was. Because of the immature mind, teenagers can’t tell the right from wrong and they don’t really understand how serious it will be if they get pregnant in a very early age. Besides, it also refers that our government should pay more attentions on our TV programs, Internet, and even movies. If we just let teenagers abuse them in some inappropriate ways, it is impossible for us to solve this problem. However, I think that another important thing to control this bad situation is parents’ disciplines and correct education on sex. Parents should notice that not to make their children see some movies or shows that are relevant to sex and the thing they must to do is to educate them the right aspects and tell them the consequences they will receive if they have pregnancy. So after I thought about this issue, there is still another perspective on my mind, which is that maybe it is good for our teenagers to enter the single-sex schools to separate the gender from the opposite one. Because it may be an another different method to reduce the rate of teen pregnancy. Last, if we gather the method mentioned above, I have confidence we can stop this phenomenon effectively and improve our society.(245words)

Stress Takes Greater Emotional Toll On Seniors

Older adults appear to be more affected by stress than younger people, a new study suggests.

My Reaction:
As for me, stress has a great influence on every one of all ages. It really plays a vital role in our daily lives and in each different part. Without having some appropriate stress, people may get lazy and just relax themselves; what’s worse, we may get rid of our responsibilities and obligations we should have. Although stress sometimes would do harm to our health physically and mentally, it can be regarded as an opportunity of self-discipline ,emotional control ,and ,the most important, promoting our compressive strengths lest we should be defeated by our weaknesses or frustrations. Therefore, if there isn’t any stress being pressed on me, I won’t encourage myself to make progresses and will not have the motive to do everything actively.
Moreover, in the beginning, it is a little bit hard for me to be convinced of what information this article gives me, despite that I used to believe that the younger people are likely to be affected by stress. Because adults are more mature and responsible than teenagers in my traditional aspects. But through the scientific proof, I was wrong. Due to their pressure on jobs, financial situations or something, I just realize why this study could suggest and I can totally understand the phenomenon of this article
